Industrial Light

Of late I’ve been putting so much energy into work that I’ve not had much left for life.

It is just the nature of being very dedicated to the client and all the intangibles that embodies.

This is nothing new for me and I have to from time be reminded to re-learn some sort of balance.

One of the areas I’ve neglected is this blog.

So today’s post hopefully will go a slight way towards rediscovering that balance.

Recently I was talking to school teacher about….. yes you guessed it, photography. They had approached me about the possibility of me coming into the school and teaching photography to some kids once in a while.

This teacher is with a very prestigious British institution of higher learning, very educated, and NOT a photographer. They love the kids and are totally dedicated to their profession…. teaching middle school children. I am the crazy artist. The photographer that could help the kids learn how to “work the cameras”.

As we talked about the concept, where the children had been, equipment, and what they liked to shoot it dawned on me that the teacher and I where talking about two different things. The teacher was focused on kit, format, pedagogy, and quantification. I was banging on about light and feeling. At one point I asked ‘What do the kids like to do?’ It did not seem that the teacher was able to hear or understand my question so focused on method that this concept flew right past.

I used some of the images from this blog post to try and help this teacher understand that photography is NOT about the kit but rather it’s about the eye.

These images are from an industrial shoot I did recently. After all the ‘must get shots’ had been bagged I spent a few hours playing, exploring, feeling, touching, and looking at the light, lines, shadows, and form of these pipes, valves, knobs, and machinery from this water purification plant.

As always the colours and textures are what seduced me.

This post may strike some as departure from my usual subjects. And though the subject may be a bit different the core is the same. Looking.
