Some examples of some of the ways I craft my distinctive Architectural and Real Estate Images.
The art of crafting impactive and memorable architectural and real estate images is very detailed and can be quite time consuming but if done correctly the result will be….
An image that transports the viewer into the idea and story of that space.
It is hard to take a bad image of a great spectacle. A fabulous sunset, a cute kitten, an amazing building, it is almost impossible to ruin those images.
The real challenge is in crafting engaging and compelling images of ordinary places. Homes or buildings that are less-than-stellar.
This is where years of skill, experience, and creative vision come into the equation.
The Story That Is Told
The Dark, Narrow, Glaring Sun Challenge
There are many many ways of accomplishing this.
Big, Bright, Spacious, Clean...
Distracting, Messy, View
It can be as simple as the choice to feature the view or to hide it.
The Feel of Space & Luxury
Harsh Light & Green Glare Everywhere
Or as complex as multiple exposures with complicated lighting.
A Spacious & Richly Apointed Space To Live In
Cramped, Dark, Dull.
The key is to always keep the end results in mind and never make the image interfere with the story.
The image must never be the story. If the client says… "Wow, cool image" then the image does not work. But when the client says "Wow, cool space" then I know the image works.
One of the many techniques I employ on locations with challenging light is light painting.
A careful use of various lighting tools to help bring out the true nature of the space.
An Interesting Cozy Garden Retreat
Hot, Glare, Dark, Messy Feeling Space
Utilizing various lighting tools and techniques I "paint" light on to the space to help focus the viewers eye on the ID, materials, surfaces, and aspects the client wants to showcase.
This is especially true when it comes to documenting historic spaces.
Staying True to the Expirience and Feel
The Dark Dull Reality The Camera Sees
Over and over I see people crafting images that are way over the top. Crazy over-saturated, over-lit, garnish renditions of a space.
Telling the Story of Mystery, Textures, and Space
Dark and Glare Everywhere
When I craft images of historic spaces the challenge is to utilize all the tools and techniques I can to tell the story but be as subtle and honest as possible.
In a way it takes more tools to make these types of images work but those tools have to be used in very subtle ways so that the image never over powers the story.
