Just back from shooting wildland fires in the Pacific Northwest of the US.
I spent a couple of days with these amazing people that every year work so stunningly hard to help protect our forests, mountain cabins, wildlife, and grasslands from fire.
Often Vets, college students, Latinos, and those that just like to hurt, add to the core of career firefighters that each year throw themselves at the next conflagration to threaten our wildernesses.
Yes the drama of helicopters and planes dropping water or fire retardant is impressive and for the most part those images dominate the media but the exhausted, dirty, dedicated, and sore men and women on the “line” are the real heroes.
Always hard working and seldom ever noticed.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who worked so hard and put up with me as well. I am amazed at your dedication.
I look forward to seeing you out there.
Julian Ray
