Of Drips and Drops

Photographing in the monsoon season and all the great opportunities the rain provides.

Recently I was talking to an artist friend of mine about the monsoon season. Specifically they asked me "what kind of images can you take on a rainy day?" As I love the rains for all the photographic gifts they provide, the colours, textures, the drama and renewal of the season, I thought that their question was a good excuse to post a few images of all the fun one can have during this time of year.
Girls playing in the rain

“Do not be angry with the rain; it simply does not know how to fall upwards.”
Vladimir Nabokov

Dragonfly on a lotus plossom

“Love like rain, can nourish from above, drenching couples with a soaking joy. But sometimes under the angry heat of life, love dries on the surface and must nourish from below, tending to its roots keeping itself alive.”
Paulo Coelho

Water drops on a hand rail

“Summer thunderstorm
Runoff flows over our feet
Surprisingly warm”
— Calvin Olsen

Woman carrying baskets in the rain

“Rainy days should be spent at home with a cup of tea and a good book.”
Bill Watterson

Pagonda in the fog

“I hear leaves drinking rain;
I hear rich leaves on top
Giving the poor beneath
Drop after drop;
'Tis a sweet noise to hear
These green leaves drinking near.

And when the Sun comes out,
After this Rain shall stop,
A wondrous Light will fill
Each dark, round drop;
I hope the Sun shines bright;
'Twill be a lovely sight.”
— William Henry Davies

Water drop on a lotus leaf

“The drops of rain make a hole in the stone, not by violence, but by oft falling.”
— Lucretius

Young girl soaking wet

“In spring rain
a pretty girl
yawning”
— Kobayashi Issa

Water drop in silhouette

The rain begins with a single drop.”
— Manal al-Sharif

Sidecare driver in the rain

“The rain to the wind said,
You push and I'll pelt.'
They so smote the garden bed
That the flowers actually knelt,
And lay lodged--though not dead.
I know how the flowers felt.”
Robert Frost

Water droplets on a roof

“A wind has blown the rain away and blown the sky away and all the leaves away, and the trees stand. I think, I too, have known autumn too long.”
— e. e. cummings

Church spire in the nighttime rain

“Let the rain kiss you
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops
Let the rain sing you a lullaby
The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk
The rain makes running pools in the gutter
The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night
And I love the rain.”
— Langston Hughes
